Bay State Savings Bank Sponsors Claremont Academy "Neighborhoods" Photography Program: Bank Director Purchases Student's Photograph from Exhibit

December 23, 2016

WORCESTER, MA / December 2016 – During the 2015-16 school year, Bay State Savings Bank sponsored a “Neighborhoods” Photography Program at Worcester’s Claremont Academy, the purpose of which was to instruct junior high school students in the art of digital photography, with a focus on Worcester Neighborhoods as the subjects.

“The students, ages 11 – 14, were extremely enthusiastic about the opportunity to participate in this pioneer program and took the work very seriously,” said Nastasia Lawton-Sticklor, PhD, Research Scientist at Hiatt Center for Urban Education/Clark University, and the children’s instructor. “There were eight students in the class who spent close to the entire school year searching their own neighborhoods for images that inspired them.” Each student submitted three finished photos for a community exhibit at the Boys & Girls Club in May, and several of those photos became the focus of small display at Bay State’s Mill Street branch throughout the summer and fall.

As a Director and customer of the Bank, Attorney Gerald Power makes frequent trips to the Mill Street branch and admired the photo exhibit during one of his visits. “All of the images were beautiful,” said Mr. Power, “but there was something very striking and special about one photo in particular, and I inquired about purchasing it. When I learned that it was done by a 13-year old young man, I was even more impressed with the composition.” The young man, whose name is Fernando Matos, was honored and excited that someone was interested in purchasing his photograph, which is called “Evening Walk.”

“Bay State Savings Bank is thrilled to have provided this opportunity for Claremont Academy students to learn about digital photography and to see (and show) their neighborhoods from new perspectives,” said Diane Giampa, SVP/Human Resources & Marketing at Bay State Savings Bank. Mr. Power, shared that he is “proud to represent Bay State Savings Bank, whose mission and values prioritize this type of community re-investment.” He says that he is delighted to have the photograph in time for the holidays and hopes the money he paid Fernando will go toward furthering his education and continued study of photography.
